Apigenin, also known as apigenin, is a polyphenol. It is one of the flavonoids in many human foods. The anti-cancer properties of this compound have been extensively studied, and even other flavonoids have no anti-tumor properties.
Use of apigenin
Many fruits and vegetables contain this compound, especially celery, coriander, cabbage and green peppers. The fruits containing this flavonoid are cherries, apples and grapes. In addition, red wine and chamomile tea also contain a certain amount of apigenin.
Like most flavonoids, apigenin also has anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-spasmodic and anti-oxidant abilities. Research on its biological characteristics is very extensive, especially its potential anti-cancer effects.
Some epidemiological studies have pointed out that consumption of this compound can reduce the incidence of cancer. There are also many studies on the effects of flavonoids on different types of cancer cells. In addition, there are some related to the efficacy of combined chemotherapy.
The intake of apigenin and other flavonoids has caused widespread concern, one of its effects in reducing the incidence of breast cancer. Recent studies have found that women who often eat celery have a lower risk of uterine cancer. However, these studies only focused on apigenin, not other flavonoids. It is well known that it can inhibit the growth of various types of cancer cells. Such as colon cancer, breast cancer, skin cancer, thyroid cancer, leukemia and pancreatic cancer.
There are different research results on the effect of apigenin dosage on chemotherapeutic agents. Although this compound can kill cancer cells, some cells are resistant to apigenin. In the study of leukemia cells, flavonoids can reduce the toxicity of the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin. This means that the consumption of apigenin will increase the severity of leukemia treatment.
However, apigenin shows a positive effect on breast cancer cells. This compound can improve the efficacy of fluorouracil chemotherapy on cancer cells. From this perspective, the consumption of this plant compound can help treat breast cancer.
